Lowcountry Contemporary

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

IN A TWIST ON TRADITION, this South Carolina home is a modern interpretation of classical form and historic vernacular. The surrounding region has a rich palette of design practices to draw upon: traditions that, when employed in new ways, could meet the clients’ desire for a fresh and contemporary home that would feel contextually appropriate in the Lowcountry setting.

Situated along a stretch of tidal river, the site offers magnificent views of native vegetation and shimmering water. Carefully curated, the natural vistas became intentional design elements, “artwork” that informed the placement of each room. The 4,400 square foot home unfolds across four modest pavilions. The delicate balancing act of embellishment and restraint captures the spirit that the client envisioned: a simplicity that is immediately understood and felt and a home that is unique as the landscape that envelops it.

TUCKED BETWEEN THE INNER PAVILIONS, the covered entry is supported by corbeled brick brackets.

THE ENTRY HALL offers a view through the home to the water.

THE LIVING ROOM PAVILION

THE BAR is tucked just off the living room for ease of serving guests. A hidden door opens into a home office for two, with spectacular river views.

THE KITCHEN PAVILION was designed for both everyday use and entertaining. At the far left is the dining room and screen porch while at right is the hallway connecting to the guest pavilion.

HALLWAYS connect the inner and outer pavilions, illuminated by walls of glass.

THE STRIKING LINES OF THE WALLBOARDS cleverly conceal ample closets, allowing the base of the stairs to serve as a boot room.

TRADITIONS OF LOWCOUNTRY CARPENTRY are restated in a crisp, bold language.

THE PRIMARY BATHROOM

BETWEEN THE DINING ROOM AND SCREEN PORCH, a glass door pockets into a wall, creating a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors.
