Toledo, Spain

Traveler: Lucas Misra
Destination: Toledo, Spain

On a recent trip to Toledo, Spain, Lucas Misra found himself immersed in a city where history and craftsmanship intertwine at every corner. From winding alleys to the monumental stonework of cathedrals and bridges, it’s clear why Toledo left such an impression.

Toledo is a fantastic medieval city located in the center of Spain. A UNESCO world heritage site, the city is perched on an isolated rock carved away by the Tagus River. Its blend of Western and Moorish history is best preserved in the marvelous stone buildings that sit there today.

Entering at St. Martin’s bridge, one can already appreciate the craftsmanship, the landscape, and the multi-cultural influences on the architecture.

Within the city’s robust walls lies a treasure trove of preserved architecture and urbanism, including the cathedral and its campanile, narrow streets built on a human scale, and, of course, more gates!

The Alcázar, a fortress dating to the 3rd century, sits on the highest hill, commanding an imposing presence.

It’s a relatively small city that can be explored in just a couple hours – the crown jewel is the Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes. It is a 15th-century monastery built by the monks that pray there.

It was here, at San Juan de los Reyes, that my love for the city exploded! Never in my life have I seen such skilled stonework in a concentrated area. It is a fitting space to sit and contemplate the beauty of Creation.

Toledo is by far my favorite city in the country of Spain and the charm of its small streets and impressive masonry are forever etched into my mind. Whether a trained architect or a curious traveler, Toledo provides glimpses of divine beauty built by the hands of man.

Thanks for joining me in Toledo!
