A Legacy Firm

When founding the firm in 1982, Jim Strickland selected the name “Historical Concepts” to symbolize the firm’s design philosophy, a choice that also spoke to his desire to create a firm where the body of work would take precedence over the name of any individual. Jim’s vision was that Historical Concepts would grow over time into an enduring institution, creating a legacy that preserves the original design philosophy and culture of excellence even as the firm’s members change with the generations.

A man with brown hair, wearing a white collared shirt and dark sweater, leans over a table with architectural blueprints, smiling at the camera. He holds a red pencil and stands in a room with floral-patterned wallpaper and cream paneling.
Five people—four men and one woman—gather around a table studying architectural blueprints. One older man in the center points at the plans while the others engage and look on. Maps and architectural prints hang on the light-colored walls behind them.
Two women work at computers in an office. The woman in front, wearing a purple top, is focused on her screen and using a mouse. The woman behind, in a light blue shirt, gestures with a pen while talking. Papers and office supplies are visible on the desk.
Four smiling young adults stand behind a table with open books, holding a sign that reads #hcinternlife in a well-lit room with brass lamps, green chairs, and floor-to-ceiling curtains behind them.
Four people are sitting around a table covered with papers and notes, working on a project. One woman is leaning over, writing on a document, while another woman looks on attentively. Two men in the background are smiling and looking at each other.

Hiring Philosophy

The firm’s growth and success are rooted in the passion, character, and talent of its people.

Throughout the years, we’ve followed a philosophy of controlled growth, viewing every new hire as a long-term investment in the future of Historical Concepts. Hiring the best and brightest, investing deeply in their development, and promoting from within have been cornerstones of our stability and culture. This approach has created a family-like atmosphere where team members are encouraged to grow into new roles and explore areas of interest throughout their careers.

Our Internship Program

Internships at Historical Concepts are more than a summer job – they are immersive, hands-on experiences.

Each intern is paired with a dedicated mentor and welcomed into a collaborative studio environment, offering an introduction to our clients, services, and project types. The internship is designed to complement academic training by bridging the gap between conceptual design work and the practical application of those skills in service to clients. Interns also gain exposure to daily life at Historical Concepts – both in and out of the office – providing a meaningful understanding of the firm’s people, culture, and purpose.

A woman stands and speaks to three seated colleagues at a table covered with papers and tablets. Behind them, architectural drawings and images are pinned to a corkboard. The group appears to be in a meeting or collaborative discussion in an office setting.
Three young adults, two seated and one standing, smile indoors. The two seated hold a white sign reading “#hcinternlife.” Behind them are a piano, a framed map, and books. The setting is bright and looks like an office or lounge.
A group of five people stand on a brick path facing a large historic red brick house with tall windows, black iron balconies, and columns. The house is surrounded by greenery and iron fencing, and the scene is lit by warm sunlight.
Two men stand at a table covered with open architecture or design books and large papers, discussing and pointing at the documents. In the background, two women stand near windows and a Happy Birthday sign. The room has a creative, collaborative atmosphere.

Three men in a bright, wood-paneled office review architectural plans spread out on a table. One man points at the plans with a ruler, while another sits and looks on. Large windows let in natural light, and bookshelves line the wall in the background.

Studio Structure & Mentorship

Small design studios are the building blocks for the firm.

Each studio is led by a Principal and Owner in the firm which ensures that each client and project are given continuous attention by the most senior members of Historical Concepts. Small studios also ensure that each team member is placed in the best environment to succeed through daily oversight and mentorship from a Principal. These factors create a culture of communication, individual growth, and collaboration, as well as consistent levels of service across a broad range of project types.
